My Mentoring Sessions

As a photographer, I believe we should every opportunity to learn. Technology is forever changing, and so is what people want for their money. No-one really wants stiff, posed photographs anymore. The candid and creative portrait is certainly running trends and people’s imagination and curiosities now.

Over the last 5 years, I’ve experienced being around some of the most talented people, to learning ‘togs (photographers) and then to those stubborn people who flat old refuse to change their ways.

Being a part of model/photographer groups, I’ve heard almost every model complaint to boot. And unfortunately, 99.99% directed at men in the industry. Time for Print* is a part of the industry where a lot of people treat it like the fashion or paid industry, but in reality, it’s completely different with how to act towards each other.

One of the most prominent situations is this

They showed me the back of the camera during the shoot, but then only gave me 3 photos from the space of 30 minutes of shooting. There were heaps I loved on the camera that I was never given…

With the digital age, we’ve created a “over-shooting” problem. It’s too easy to click that shutter 100 times and only get 2 good photos. This happens with EVERYONE. ‘Togs whom boast 30 years experience are sometimes major culprits of this energy which turns models off modelling.

*Time for print is where the model, photographer and any other interested parties contribute to the shoot for free, with the expectation of receiving images for their time and product.

My mentoring experiences aim to help photographers learn the following points

  1. Camera basics

  2. Photographic techniques

  3. How to work with models (etiquette and communication)

  4. How to photograph intentionally to avoid a massive cull

  5. Minimizing workload

  6. Techniques of editing

Model specific workshops aim to help

  1. Models feel more comfortable in front of the camera

  2. Educate models on safe working practices

  3. Teach models simple ways of posing for when the photographer isn’t giving much direction

  4. Models work with photographers for a specific concept

  5. Approach photographers and get them interested

Basically, I’ve created this workshop space to help address areas where I think many photographic workshops really miss out on making a meaningful impact. One crucial aspect is Building Working Relationships. Photography workshops often focus primarily on the technical aspects of shooting, yet there’s only so much you can learn from simply having an experienced model placed in front of you for a concept that the host has organised.

I understand how transformative a photoshoot can be, both positively and negatively. My own experience during my first photoshoot left me feeling disappointed, and it was that feeling that ignited my passion for photography. I realized there was a crucial need for a supportive and encouraging environment in which individuals could express themselves freely.

My workshops go so much further than just one day. I’ll be here to support, motivate and help you with anything down the track. I’ve also been known to attend boudoir photoshoots photographed by men I’m friends with so that models feel more at ease. THESE are the men you want to be photographed by!

Consideration works wonder towards positive experiences.

Photographer Specific Workshops

These can be done as individual specific or as groups, whichever is best for your comfort level. If approached for an individual workshop, I’ll work on creating a programme which suits the person the best. There will be questions about your experience, what you want to learn about, and what genre you would prefer to learn more about.

My specialties are

  • business workflow

  • boudoir

  • creative portraiture

  • wedding photography

  • editing workflow in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop

A photographer specific workshop can look a little like this… expect a good portion of the day!

Model Specific Workshops

As with the photographer workshops, these can be done as individual specific or as groups, whichever is best for your comfort level. If approached for a one-on-one workshop, I’ll work on creating a plan which suits the person the best.

They’ll be aimed towards the genre of portraits you would like to get into and would be a one-on-one photoshoot with myself. I’ll talk with you beforehand about what to look out for (red and green flags) when working with photographers, best practices working with people and simple posing techniques that will help you look even more amazing and feel confident.

There is so much more to portraiture than “just turning up and shooting”. Relationships and consideration are important factors in getting the perfect images and creating a great reputation where everyone wants to shoot with you!
